Bengali Sweet Tomato Chutney | Tomato'r Chutney | Durga Puja Special


Tomato Chutney is a traditional Bengali sweet chutney which is served at the end of the meal with fried papad. In most of the occasion including festival, this is a must cooked recipe in Bengali cuisine. It is made with ripe red tomato with some dry fruits and mango candy (Aamsotto/Aam papad bar). For this chutney, you don't need too much preparation and time also. Its a very easy to cook recipe. If you follow few tips, your chutney will be also perfect.

Cook Time       35 minutes

Serves            8-10 people


Ingredients:

  • Chopped Tomato- 3 large(400 gram)
  • Mustard Oil- 2 tablespoon
  • Dry Red Chilli- 1 piece
  • Panch Foron- 1 teaspoon
  • Salt to taste
  • Turmeric Powder- 1/2 teaspoon
  • Sugar- 1 cup
  • Tamarind Pulp- 3 tablespoon
  • Raisins- 1 Handful
  • Mango Candy/Aamsotto(Diced)- 90 gram
  • Pitted Dates(Cut Lengthwise)- 10 pieces
  • Cashew Nuts(Halved)- 2 tablespoon

How to Make:

  1. Take a sauce pan. Add mustard oil. Allow it to heat.
  2. Add dry red chilli(break from middle). fry for few seconds.
  3. Add Panch Foron and let it crackle for 15 seconds. (continuous stir to get even)
  4. Add chopped tomato. 
  5. Seasoned with salt & turmeric powder.
  6. Mix well & cover to cook in medium heat for 10 minutes.
  7. After that, you can see tomato will soften. Try to mash well with your spatula.
  8. Add sugar and mix well.
  9. Cover and cook for 5 minutes in medium heat.
  10. Then add tamarind pulp and mix well.
  11. Cover to cook for 5 minutes.
  12. Then add all dry fruits including aamsotto and give a good stir.
  13. Cover and cook for 10 minutes. Keep the flame medium to low.
  14. Turn off the heat and give a rest time for 5 minutes(covered). 
  15. Serve it at the end of the meal with fried / roasted papad.

My Tip: 

  • Tomato should be perfectly ripe & bright red in colour to get perfect colour, test & texture .
  • For this chutney, we need the generous amount of sugar for the perfect texture. So, please don't reduce the amount of sugar.
  • If you don't have tamarind, you can use dry mango powder (Aamchur) or lemon juice.
  • You can adjust the dry fruit quantity as per your choice.
  • Don't make the chutney too thick. Because it will be thicker automatically once cool down. For the consistency, you can check the video above.
  • If you want, you can store it in a airtight glass container for 4-6 weeks in refrigerator.
